Covance Withdraws Motions to Gag PETA Investigation
In the circuit court of Fairfax County, Virginia, billion-dollar animal-testing conglomerate Covance
withdrew its motions for a temporary restraining order and for a preliminary injunction against PETA.
The company had sought to prevent PETA from publicly displaying video taken by a PETA investigator
while she worked undercover at a Covance laboratory.
Covance's decision to drop the motions comes on the heels of PETA Europe's win in a British court
last week in which Covance had sought a similar injunction. Not only did that judge dismiss the case,
he noted that the arguments against granting an injunction were "overwhelming," and the video showing
Covance's verbal and physical assaults on primates "highly disturbing." Covance was also ordered to
pay PETA Europe £50,000 (~ US$91,000) for its legal costs.

The U.K. judge observed, "A verbal description of the video is bound to be an unsatisfactory substitute
for watching it. … I take just two aspects of what can be seen, the rough manner in which animals
[are] handled and the bleakness of the surroundings in which they are kept. These are matters which,
even to a viewer with no particular interest in animal welfare, at least cry out for explanation."
